Our Children Oregon stands in solidarity with the Black community in demanding the dismantling of oppressive systems and in doing the work for racial justice. To name, challenge, and actively work against the pervasive racial inequalities—white supremacy, anti-blackness, structural racism—that permeate our communities, stripping generations of the circumstances, the supports, and the resources necessary to not only thrive but to simply live. We cannot do right by all children in Oregon until we do right by Black children.
Since Our Children Oregon issued our Statement of Solidarity on June 3, 2020, we have taken the following legislative actions:
- Provided testimony on police accountability measures in the First Special Session of 2020.
- Provided testimony in support of the Oregon Indian Child Welfare Act in the First Special Session of 2020.
- Sent a letter to the members of the Emergency Board prior to their July 14, 2020 meeting in support of the Oregon Cares Fund for Black Relief and Resiliency and an allocation to repair the Warms Springs water system.
- Provided testimony to Ways and Means Subcommittees requesting they use a racial equity lens in making budget decisions.
