OUR WORK

Child Abuse Prevention

Bolstering Child Abuse Prevention Services for Oregon Families

For more than three decades, Our Children Oregon (previously operating as the Children’s Trust Fund of Oregon) has focused on child abuse prevention and strengthening Oregon families through strategic investments in local and statewide child abuse prevention programs. This legacy continues as we seek to offer a comprehensive prevention organization that supports the health, safety and well-being of all children in our state.

Child Abuse Prevention Affiliates
as Advocates

Serving in the role of Connector and Educator, Our Children Oregon connects the membership of the the Oregon Child Abuse Prevention Affiliate Network—a statewide network of forty organizations doing their part to protect children and strengthen families. Many affiliate organizations are also engaged through the Children’s Agenda to advocate for policies and investments that will provide concrete supports for the families they serve.

Primary prevention using the Protective Factor Framework

The Framework for Prevention of Child Maltreatment establishes three levels of prevention (primary, secondary, tertiary). In our role, Our Children Oregon provides primary prevention which includes promoting well-being through activities aimed at the general population in order to stop child maltreatment before it begins.

The five protective factors are associated with reducing child abuse and increasing positive outcomes for young children and their families:

  • Resilience
  • Social Connections
  • Social-Emotional Competence of Children
  • Concrete Supports (e.g., economic security, safe and stable housing, affordable transportation, and access to healthcare)
  • Knowledge of Parenting and Child Development

We Support Programs That Support Successful Childhoods and Healthy Families

Through funding and capacity-building support, we engage:

Home Visiting Programs

These programs work directly with families whose children are at risk for trauma. Through voluntary services, individualized to meet the unique needs and culture of each family, the program teaches parents what to expect of their children at different ages, and also models positive parenting behavior.

Relief Nursery
Programs

Offering a unique array of comprehensive family support services to struggling parents, from crisis response to therapeutic classrooms to alcohol and drug recovery support. Relief Nursery staff work to support struggling parents and foster family success, keeping children safe from abuse and neglect.

Parenting Education and Family Support Programs

Education classes and activities strengthen parenting skills, help parents with stress management, and provide information on healthy child development. These programs are community-based and voluntary, making them accessible to parents seeking support.

How to Report Child Abuse

Firstly, if you believe someone is being hurt or is in danger, call 9-1-1 immediately. Child abuse can be reported to the Oregon Child Abuse Hotline by calling 1-855-503-SAFE (7233).

The toll-free Oregon Child Abuse Hotline is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. This number allows you to report the abuse of any child or adult to the Oregon Department of Human Services. Additionally, child abuse can be reported to your local police department, county sheriff, county juvenile department, or Oregon State Police.
