Youth from Pendleton to Medford to Portland will be participating in historic Debate for Oregon’s Future
The final debate questioners have been selected for the Debate for Oregon’s Future. More than a dozen young people, representing 8 cities and ranging in ages between 12 and 19, will be posing questions in the first gubernatorial debate of the year. The debate will broadcast live on KOIN TV, KOIN.com, KDRV TV, KBNZ, and on KPAM radio on October 2, 2018 at 7:00 pm.

“The next governor will be making decisions that will affect young people, but our first -hand perspectives have never before been brought into a debate ,” says Rose Lawrence, one of the questioners. “This debate will be different because the candidates will have to answer directly to us.”
The Debate for Oregon’s Future is presented by Children First for Oregon, KOIN 6, and Pamplin Media Group.
“So much is at stake for youth in our upcoming election,” says Tonia Hunt, Children First for Oregon’s executive director. “We are proud to be part of this historic event that will bring a sharp focus on the lived experiences of young people and what matters to them the most.”
Last weekend the selected youth went through a training session with veteran journalists Jeff Gianola of KOIN 6 and John Schrag of Pamplin Media Group.
““The breadth and depth of interests shown by the participants was both staggering and impressive,” says Schrag. “The candidates should brace themselves. Their young constituents will not be pulling any punches.”
The Debate for Oregon’s Future will include the three major party candidates for governor in this year’s November election: Gov. Kate Brown (D) and challengers Rep. Knute Buehler (R) and Patrick Starnes (I).
“This race is so critical to the future of people across the state that we wanted to hear from kids across the state, and worked to get it broadcast across the state, as well,” says Jeff Gianola, KOIN 6 anchor.
